Testing should follow risk.
Different materials, constructions and exposure routes require different evidence. Gateway does not imply that one test answers every compliance question.
| Method | Plain English | Role |
|---|---|---|
| XRF | "What appears to be in it?" | Fast material screening and identification of elements present. |
| ICP | "How much is actually in it?" | Laboratory quantification where appropriate. |
| Nickel release | "What can migrate during wear?" | Assesses nickel release rather than simply total nickel content. |
Access to credible testing infrastructure.
Gateway uses independent testing infrastructure at the Mega Common Facility Centre in SEEPZ, Mumbai, developed as a Government of India project with the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). This demonstrates access to credible testing infrastructure; it is not an endorsement of Gateway.
Final or further testing can be instructed by the importer in the UK, through the UK Assay Office route.
Not limited to precious metals
Recycled metals and base metals may present different or higher material risks and are considered within the risk-led approach.

Gateway is onboarding expressions of interest from manufacturers and from UK buyers and importers ahead of launch.
